What Happens When You Can’t Hear Your Child Say Happy Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day can land heavy when your autistic child doesn’t — or can’t — say the words “I love you” or “Happy Mother’s Day.”
It’s a day when the silence can feel loud.
When it seems like nothing will change.
And when your heart aches wondering if you’ll ever hear those sweet words from your child’s mouth.
But what if I told you… your child tells you they love you every single day — just not in the way the world expects.
What if love looks like that fleeting moment of eye contact.
Or the way their hand gently brushes your back, grounding themselves in your presence.
Maybe it’s in the way their body softens when you lie beside them at night, safe and soothed simply because you’re there.
Love doesn’t always sound like words.
It shows up in glances, gestures, energy, and trust.
And the bond between a mother and her child? It’s deeper than language.
As a mum, you would go to the ends of the earth for your child.
You strive to be strong, steady, capable.
But your child doesn’t need perfection. They just need you.
Not once, not now and then — but every day.
They need your steady love.
Your quiet presence.
Your motherly instinct that knows them better than anyone else ever could.
They don’t need your guilt.
They don’t need you to carry the weight of everything you think you’ve done wrong.
They don’t want your energy poured into self-blame or second-guessing.
Because to them, you are home.
You’re their safest place — the one person in the world where they can fully be themselves.
Your love is the balm that soothes the cuts, mends the meltdowns, and eases the moments of overwhelm.
Your love is powerful.
But are you giving it freely?
Or is it tangled in guilt, shame, or grief?
Today, I invite you to pause.
To really see your child — not for what’s missing, or what’s “not quite there yet,”
but for who they truly are. Fully. Completely. Beautifully whole.
A child navigating a world that wasn’t built for them — and still showing up.
And you? You were given the title of Mum because they needed you.
Not anyone else.
So this Mother’s Day, let’s not measure love by words spoken —
but by hearts held, safety given, and love shown in a thousand quiet ways.
You are seen. You are loved.
And you are exactly the mother your child needs.
