Today I want to be vulnerable with you

by | Dec 23, 2024

Where to even begin? This year has been an absolute whirlwind—a mix of highs and lows that have shaped me in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Let’s start with the good!

This year, I launched my Everyday Heroes Podcast, and it has been an incredible journey. Watching it grow into a valuable learning tool for parents, carers, and anyone navigating life with autism has been so rewarding.

On the home front, I’ve been refining what my angel boy needs from me as his homeschooling mum. It’s been a lesson in meeting him where he’s at, and while it’s challenging at times, it’s also so beautiful to witness his unique growth.

I’ve also had the privilege of hosting 11 Coffee and Connection events this year. These gatherings have been a highlight for me—connecting with other parents, sharing stories, and building a sense of community that’s so important.

Professionally, I’ve had the honour of speaking at various events, sharing my journey, and advocating for parents and children alike. Personally, we celebrated my gorgeous mum turning 70 and took her on a special holiday to Darwin. And, of course, watching my babies continue to grow, explore, and make sense of the world has been a gift.

Now, for the hard stuff.

If I’m being completely honest, I really struggled with my angel boy turning 10 this year. Seeing his peers reach milestones that felt far ahead of where he’s at was heartbreaking. It’s one of those moments where your head knows better—knows not to compare—but your heart still aches. I knew I needed support, so I reached out to a coach to help me process those feelings, and it’s made all the difference.

Balancing the needs of both my children has also been a challenge. My daughter has needed more of my attention this year, and I’ve had to be extra mindful of staying regulated so I could guide her and meet her needs. At times, it felt like a delicate dance—juggling homeschooling, running a growing business, exercising, raising two children, and keeping the household running—all while trying to carve out quality time for my husband and I.

I’ll be honest, there were days when it felt like there just wasn’t enough of me to go around.

But amidst all of that, I’ve learned so much.

As we approach 2025, I know big things are on the horizon. I’ve been working hard behind the scenes on a new course for parents and carers of newly diagnosed autistic children. This course is a labor of love—something I’m pouring my heart, soul, and tears into because I want it to be exactly what you need.

It’s this time of year when many people start reflecting on the year that’s been and thinking about their “word of the year” for the next. I haven’t chosen mine yet, but when I do, you’ll be the first to know! What’s your word for 2025?

I want to leave you with something I’ve learned this year:

Be patient.

Be patient with your autistic child. Be patient with yourself.

We often rush to reach the finish line, thinking that achieving the goal will bring us fulfillment. But the real growth, the real transformation, happens in the lessons we learn along the way. Life has a funny way of teaching us exactly what we need, but the question is—are we listening?

So, as we head into the holiday season, let’s take a moment to slow down. Christmas and the New Year can feel heavy—filled with reflection, sometimes regret, and often a wish to be further along than where we are. But remember, progress isn’t always visible. It’s there in the small moments, in the patience you’ve shown, and in the love you’ve given.

Life has thrown its curveballs this year, but through it all, I’ve held onto gratitude. And that’s my wish for you too:

May your Christmas be as calm and peaceful as possible. May your New Year be filled with love, kindness, and an abundance of gratitude.

Here’s to an incredible 2025—it’s going to be amazing, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

With love and gratitude,

Natalie
