Stop being stuck – make the decision

Whose permission are you seeking?  Is it your own or someone else’s?  Are you looking for some sort of approval for the choices you make and which direction you take?

Far too often mums of autistic children, in the beginning, are nervous to make the decision, to choose the direction that they need to head into for their child.  Maybe its because we’ve always had decisions made for us and sometimes it’s because we’ve been so long in auto drive that this new sense of choice can be overwhelming.

Well, I’m here to tell you that you’re spearheading this operation.  You’re at the helm, the captain, the decision maker.  You get the final say and you must be ok with that.  To make the decision whichever way it falls and know that you’re going to have good and bad that comes with that decision.  You won’t always get it right and sometimes you will absolutely get it wrong, but I’m here to tell you that its ok.  Life won’t fall apart, you won’t suddenly become an average parent because of those choices.  Your child will still love you and you will still have a roof over your head.  Will you have to start over?  Maybe.  Is this journey an all-encompassing learning adventure?  Absolutely.  Do we always know the way forward?  No.  Are we supposed to always know the way forward?  Still no.

So, give yourself a break.  You’re doing the best you can with the tools that you’ve got.  You’re choosing what’s best for your child at this very point in time.  You are showing up and doing the work.  Digging deep so that you can move past the barriers to find out what is in the way is the way.

I stand with you my beautiful friend.  I stand with you in every way there is to stand with a friend.  Because I am you and you are me and we are united by a connection of autism.  Don’t cry about the diagnosis – share with the world, shout it from the rooftops about all the most exceptional things your child can do, because you my friend are his or her mum.  You get to see them in all their glory when the world sometimes can’t.
