New Year, New Focus: Setting Goals for Yourself in 2025

by | Feb 3, 2025

Welcome to 2025! A fresh year filled with new possibilities, big goals, and the excitement of what’s to come.

But before we dive headfirst into the hustle of the year, I want to ask you—have you set any goals for yourself? Not just for your child, but for you?

I know how easy it is to put yourself last. As parents, especially as mums, we pour so much energy into supporting our autistic children that we often leave nothing for ourselves—not even a crumb. That stops today.

Why Setting Goals for Yourself Matters

You already know how important goal-setting is for your child’s progress, but what about your own? Your brain needs a target—something to focus on. Without it, it’s like an archer shooting arrows in every direction, hoping one will land.

So let’s take a moment to turn that focus inward.

Your Personal Goal-Setting Check-In

Grab a notebook and write down the following areas of your life. Then, rate each one on a scale of 1-10 (1 = Needs Major Improvement, 10 = Thriving).

  • Exercise & Movement
  • 1:1 Connection with Your Partner
  • Self-Care
  • Journaling & Reflection
  • Prayer or Meditation
  • Reading for Enjoyment
  • Hiking or Outdoor Activities
  • Friendships & Social Connection
  • Family Relationships
  • Social Media & TV Consumption
  • Nutrition & Eating Habits
  • Alcohol & Sugar Intake
  • Rest & Sleep
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Creativity & Hobbies
  • Fun & Playfulness

Once you’ve rated each area, reflect on what you’d like to improve or change. What small, realistic steps can you take? And by when?

Progress, Not Perfection

If your scores are lower than you’d like, that’s okay. If you’re raising a newly diagnosed autistic child, it’s completely understandable that your energy has been stretched thin. But there is a way forward—one that includes you in the picture.

This isn’t about adding pressure or making drastic changes overnight. It’s about taking small, manageable steps toward creating a life where you feel more balanced, fulfilled, and energized—for both yourself and your child.

Let’s Do This Together

If you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to start, I’d love to chat with you about your goals and help break them down into bite-sized, achievable steps.

2025 is the Year of Transformation—just like the snake shedding its skin, you have the opportunity to step into a new version of yourself.

So, what’s your first step? 💛____________________________________________________________________________________________
