Autism and the Mum Identity Crisis: Finding the Path Back to YOU

by | Mar 17, 2025

Our identity shapes who we are. It shapes the person that we once were as well as the person we’re becoming.  That’s why when, as a Mum, you receive an autism diagnosis for your child, it can feel like your identity is completely stripped away from you.

You see, we’ve had 25 30, 35 years of practice when it comes to our identity.  We have nuermous past experiences that we’ve built on that’s made us who we are today. These experiences have shaped us and moulded us into who we are in the present tense. The only problem is that when your peadiatrican says the words “your son/daughter is autistic”, you no longer have those years to fall back onto for a reference point.

That day marks day 1 of a new chapter that you are creating, and now you start from ground zero and build up the foundation for what you will need in order to show up for yourself, your children and your husband/partner, and that can feel really really scary.

This is where the grief piece comes in. It’s not just about mourning the vision you once had for your child but also grappling with losing who you thought you were. It’s like being blindfolded on a familiar route—you know the way, but you’ve lost the sense of direction and certainty that guided you.

At some point, every mum of an autistic child must shed their old self—like a snake shedding its skin—and redefine who they are. You need to figure out what you like, what you don’t, what helps you feel regulated, and what you truly stand for. Because if you don’t define yourself, society will do it for you, boxing you into an identity that doesn’t fit.

Nearly a decade after my son’s autism diagnosis, I know exactly who I am and what I stand for. I know what works for my family and me. But getting to this point took years of struggle, heartache, and letting go of who I thought I needed to be.

That’s why I created my guide, “Autism and the Mum Identity Crisis: Finding the Path Back to YOU.” It’s a 5-step guide to help you shed the old layers and rediscover your true self—so you can show up for your kids with confidence and clarity.

This is a 5 step guide that will help you start to shed that outer skin.  To help you redefine who you are and for you to find out who you need to be in order for you to show up for your kids.
