Did Autism Awareness Month Inspire You to Act?

by | May 6, 2025

As Autism Awareness Month Comes to a Close, I Have a Question for You…

Did this month impact you?
Did it impact your autistic child?
Did it impact your neurotypical child (if you have one)?

The heart of Autism Awareness Month is about education, inclusion, and understanding — creating a world where autistic children and adults are seen, heard, and celebrated for exactly who they are.

There are so many ways you can help build that world — ways you can gently and powerfully educate those around you about your child’s autism. Here are just a few meaningful ideas:

  • Speak at a school assembly.
Share a little about your child — what their stims look like, what it feels like when they become overwhelmed or dysregulated, and, most importantly, how their classmates and teachers can support them in the classroom.
  • Write for the school newsletter.
Ask your school if you can contribute a short piece that helps other families understand autism a little better — and what inclusion really looks like.
  • Use your social media platform.
If you’ve already shared your child’s diagnosis with family and friends, consider posting about autism facts and figures (for example, in Australia today, 1 in 40 children are autistic). Or share a beautiful story — maybe something your child did at a young age that challenged the typical milestones. Share their magic.
  • Partner with your local library.
Explore books written by autistic authors or books that support parents raising autistic children. You could even suggest your library highlight these during Autism Awareness Month next year.

Let your child’s autism be a reason to speak up, to share all the incredible things that come with neurodiversity.
Show the world that autism isn’t something to fear or mock — it’s something to respect and celebrate.

Most importantly, let your child see you standing tall beside them — showing them every single day that they are worthy, they are wonderful, and they are never alone.

So, as this month closes, I leave you with this question:
How will you share your child’s autism with the world?

And remember, Autism Awareness should not only be confined to a month on the calendar, but something we think about always.
